Camera off pukul 10AM is not always attitude problem.
Kadang dia cuma survival mode.
Meeting start 10AM. Link dah masuk. Semua orang punya icon muncul satu-satu. Ada yang camera on, muka fresh macam baru keluar Pinterest morning routine. Ada yang blur sikit. Ada yang background office. Then ada kau.
Camera off.
Mic mute.
Nama je hidup.
And immediately rasa macam kau tengah commit small workplace crime.
But bestie, let’s be honest. Pukul 10AM tu bukan semua orang dah fully loaded. Ada yang baru sampai office lepas LRT delay. Ada yang online class dari bilik sewa with laundry mountain behind laptop. Ada yang WFH tapi muka masih dalam “jangan tegur aku dulu” era.
Camera off bukan semestinya malas.
Sometimes it is privacy. Sometimes it is bad WiFi. Sometimes it is tudung belum settle. Sometimes it is acne patch masih on duty. Sometimes it is simply social battery tengah 12% and nobody brought charger.
Tapi jangan guna camera off as invisibility cloak.
I support camera off. I really do.
But I don’t support masuk meeting macam hantu WiFi.
Kalau camera off, at least be present in other ways. Reply bila nama dipanggil. Unmute cepat. Drop note dekat chat. Nod verbally sikit, like “yes, faham” or “boleh, I’ll check.” Jangan sampai orang wonder kau still dekat laptop ke dah pergi goreng nugget.
Because there is a difference between protecting energy and disappearing.
One is boundary. One is kerja orang lain kena carry.
SisPilih rule: camera boleh off, accountability jangan off.
Online presence ni pelik sebab semua benda jadi performance.
If camera off, people assume kau disengaged. If camera on, suddenly kau kena manage face, lighting, background, posture, expression. Tak boleh nampak bored sangat. Tak boleh makan. Tak boleh check phone. Tak boleh letak muka “I have questions about this company’s life choices.”
It becomes acting.
Not big acting. But small constant acting.
And for girls especially, camera on selalu datang dengan extra mental load. Is my room messy? Is my face oily? Does my tudung look weird? Can they see my family walking behind? Is my skin breaking out obvious? Why is the laptop angle giving passport photo trauma?
No wonder ramai pilih black screen.
That black screen is not empty. It is peace.
Bila camera on actually worth it?
Some moments memang better camera on.
First meeting dengan new team? Camera on kejap helps. Presentation? Maybe on during intro and Q&A. Interview? Yes, unfortunately, muka kena clock in sekali. Group discussion yang banyak emotion and nuance? Camera on can avoid misunderstanding.
But routine update meeting yang could have been email punya cousin? Camera off is valid.
Online class where lecturer is screen-sharing slides for two hours and your WiFi sounds like it’s breathing through straw? Valid.
Morning check-in when you’re still mentally walking from bed to brain? Valid.
The key is intention. Jangan camera off sebab “I don’t care.” Camera off because “I care, but I refuse to perform face for no reason.”
Big difference.
SisPilih verdict
10AM camera off meeting is not automatically malas. Sometimes it is social battery survival with broadband connection.
If you need privacy, off. If your bandwidth is dying, off. If your room is chaos, off. If your face is just not ready to become corporate content, off.
But stay responsive. Stay useful. Stay human.
Because showing up doesn’t always need full HD face reveal.
Sometimes showing up is one clear answer, one useful note, one “I’ll handle this by today,” delivered from a black square while kau sip kopi and quietly try not to scream.
Honestly? Relatable gila.
